The Warm Heart Of Africa

Picture
Malawi is known as the "Warm Heart of Africa" for its kind and hospitable people.  It was a British colony before independence in 1964.  Malawi has never experienced the civil war and strife that seems to characterize the history of so many African countries over the last fifty years.  But despite this peaceful past, Malawi remains one of the poorest countries in the world.  As of 2015, the World Bank has ranked Malawi as the poorest country in the world (according to GDP figures).  A lack of natural resources, limited export capabilities, and dependency on subsistence farming have limited the growth of Malawi's economy.  Poverty grips much of the country, resulting in a lack of medical care, education, and infrastructure.  Diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis coupled with a lack of food and clean water have resulted in a life expectancy just over 50 years.  The cities of Malawi are growing quickly, but about 80% of the country still resides in rural villages.  If you want the bare facts, check out the CIA Factbook on Malawi.

One of the most beautiful things about Malawi is that this relative poverty has not determined the character and heart of its people.  They are a warm culture that welcomes visitors and values time spent with people.  We admire, and seek to emulate, the humble, hospitable, and kind character of Malawians.
